REMAINING QUESTIONS & ISSUES
We've compiled the most critical questions from our neighbors to provide a transparent look at the concerns surrounding the senior center's future.
Why was the Hawk site the only focus?
This is a primary concern we have addressed. While multiple locations were initially on the table, the focus narrowed only to the Hawk site after the elections. We are calling for a multi-site evaluation to find the most suitable and safe location for our local seniors. Why did the Council go from thoughtful consideration of multiple sites during the summer and fall to discounting all else for only a feasability study at the Hawk after the November elctions?
Is a two-story building safe for senior residents?
A multi-story design presents major risks for seniors with limited mobility during emergency evacuations. Elevators and stairwells are not a reliable exit strategy in a crisis. We maintain that a single-story layout is the safest standard for accessibility and resident security.
How will this affect our taxes?
We advocate for using existing reserves, asset sales, and grants to support building a new senior facility. Our community already carries one of the highest tax rates in the county, and we believe fiscal responsibility should prioritize available funds over additional levies. Our city's fund balance is significantly higher than the recommended amount for municipalities. A portion of fund balance, along with monies from Oakland County Parks, state and federal grants, and resources from the sale of a large land parcel at the current Costick Center site (minus that needed for the senior center there) would combine to be great financial resources to build the new Costick Center.
What is the projected timeline for site decisions?
The timeline remains fluid as we push for more comprehensive studies. Currently, the City Council is reviewing initial feasibility reports, but we are advocating for a thorough pause to allow for comparative analysis between the Hawk and the Costick Center land site.
What is the best way to help?
Active participation is key. You can join our local advocacy group, attend City Council sessions, and sign our community letter. We are dedicated to ensuring that every question from our neighbors receives a direct answer from the city.
Primary Site Concerns
This hub provides an in-depth exploration of the core issues originally mentioned on our home page. Understanding these specific points is vital for every resident advocating for a responsible development plan.
Safety & Accessibility
Moving away from a single-floor plan compromises safety for residents. We advocate for a design that ensures rapid evacuation for all seniors, regardless of mobility.
Budget & Milage Use
We urge city officials to utilize internal fund balances and other sources of monies before proposing new taxes. Transparency in financial planning is essential for our community's fiscal health.
Public Transparency
Major public developments must be discussed openly. We are here to ensure that site selection and repurposing plans are held to the highest public standard.
